There’s that funny cliché that because designers and developers work behind a computer that we’re geeks. I’m bloody well not.
I’m not actually offended by the tag of “nerd” which is often applied to designers and developers but based on the many people I’ve met and know in the industry it would appear it’s a stereotype that’s been confused with dedication and passion along with actually enjoying what you do.
Most people who work in the creative industry actually seem to have a wide range of hobbies and interests that are both related (like photography, music, collecting books, type, and much more) and unrelated to design (like cooking, sports etc).
A huge number of people I speak with and follow on Twitter are active playing football, running (checking in with Endomondo etc) and riding road and mountain bikes, swimming and so on. A long way from the image of a scrawny teen hunched over a computer in a darkened room.
Having dedication and passion, along with a genuine interest in what you do doesn’t make you a geek, it makes you lucky.
