I’m not really a big fan of apple software, but I unfortunately have from time to time the requirement to clutter up my PC with Safari. Can it be true that Safari doesn’t have a simple “new tab” button I can add when I customise my toolbar?

Sounds like a small thing but I’ve instantly found this to be very annoying. Answers on a postcard on whether this is a design overview or something I’ve missed.
